The Bonsmara was developed at Mara Research Station in South Africa between 1937 and 1963 by Prof Jan Bonsma. It combines Afrikaner (indigenous), Hereford, and Shorthorn genetics in proportions specifically calculated for optimal performance in the African environment — 5/8 European, 3/8 Afrikaner.

Bonsmara cattle are South Africa's most popular commercial beef breed, prized for growth rate, feed efficiency, tick resistance, and exceptional beef quality. They perform well under extensive management systems with minimal supplementary feeding.

The Bonsmara's balanced breed composition gives it 'intermediate' status — neither too adapted to the bush nor too European to handle the climate — making it an ideal export breed for most African countries and subtropical export markets.
