Shorthorn cattle are one of Britain's oldest and most influential breeds, originating in northeast England in the 18th century. At their peak they were the world's most numerous cattle breed, and their genetic influence is found in many modern composite breeds.

Today's Shorthorns exist in two distinct types: Beef Shorthorn (selected for growth and carcass quality) and Milking Shorthorn (dual-purpose for milk and beef). Both types share excellent foraging ability, docile temperament, and strong maternal instincts.

Shorthorns are particularly valued in developing agricultural systems for their dual-purpose utility — providing both milk for family nutrition and beef for income — without requiring intensive management.
