Dohne Merino (also known as Dohne) was developed at the Dohne Agricultural Research Institute in the Eastern Cape from 1939 onwards by crossing Peppin Merino ewes with German Mutton Merino rams. The result is a balanced dual-purpose sheep that produces quality wool while also growing sufficient frame for profitable mutton production.

Dohne Merino wool averages 20–23 micron — fine enough to carry a premium over coarser wools while the animal's meat performance provides insurance against wool price volatility. They are popular with commercial producers seeking income from both fibre and meat without specialising entirely in either.

Dohne Merinos are hardy and adaptable, performing well across a range of South African farming conditions from the semi-arid Karoo to wetter highveld environments.
