The Dorper is South Africa's most successful sheep breed development, created in the 1930s from Dorset Horn and Black-headed Persian sheep by the South African Department of Agriculture. Today, the Dorper is the world's fastest-growing meat sheep breed, with major populations across Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and North America.

Dorpers are uniquely valuable because they shed their fleece naturally — eliminating the cost and labour of shearing while producing a short, mixed coat that requires no management. This makes them ideal for tropical and subtropical environments where wool sheep are impractical.

Dorper lambs are extremely fast-growing, reaching 36–40 kg live weight in just 90–100 days. Their meat is characteristically tender and mild-flavoured, with a fat distribution that is evenly distributed rather than in a heavy tail deposit.
