Hampshire sheep originate from Hampshire County, England and are one of Britain's heaviest and most muscular meat breeds. They were developed from crossing Southdown rams with old Hampshire and Wiltshire sheep in the 19th century, selecting aggressively for size and muscular development.

Hampshire sheep produce impressively heavy lambs — Hampshire rams are consistently used as terminal sires in programmes seeking maximum weight and muscle. Hampshire-cross lambs are known for their broad loins and heavy hindquarters that command premium prices in butcheries.

Hampshire ewes are large, good mothers that produce ample milk for rapid lamb growth. They are adapted to a range of environments and perform well in both intensive and semi-intensive farming systems.
