The Meatmaster was developed in South Africa in the 1990s by crossing Dorper and various fat-tailed breeds (including Damara, Karakul, and Afrikaner Vet) to create a shedding breed with superior meat conformation. The breed is specifically designed for commercial producers who want maximum meat output with minimum input costs.

Meatmaster sheep shed their coats naturally, eliminating shearing costs. They are heat-tolerant, disease-resistant, and produce well-conformed carcasses with high dressing percentages. Their fat distribution is ideal — primarily subcutaneous rather than in excess kidney fat.

Meatmaster ewes demonstrate outstanding mothering ability, producing sufficient milk for multiple lambs and weaning lambs that are well-grown and robust.
